Blood donation is now more inclusive for the LGBTQ+ community
Many are now able to donate blood through a new inclusive screening process that expands blood donor eligibility and eliminates questions based on sexual orientation through updated FDA guidelines issued in May 2023. The American Red Cross celebrates this significant progress and also recognizes there is more work to be done to make blood donation even more inclusive. You can view the Red Cross statement on the final FDA guidance.
We welcome you in our humanitarian mission. The Red Cross is committed to achieving an inclusive blood donation process that treats all potential donors with equality and respect while maintaining donor and patient safety. Training is provided for employees and volunteers to be sensitive to the needs of all potential blood donors. Why Give Blood?
About 1 in 3 people will need a blood transfusion.
1 in 7 hospital patients need blood.
It only takes about 5-10 minutes to donate blood.
Donors spend approximately 45 minutes at the blood drive from the moment they walk in, to the time they finish their last cookie.
One donation can save more than one life.
You can find out what your blood type is!
You get a free mini physical exam including pulse, bp and hemoglobin check via sensor. No more finger poke.
You can follow your blood journey by downloading the Red Cross Blood App and find out what hospital your blood is transported to when it is being transported!
