Resource Center

The Center is your one-stop resource for all things LGBT+ in the Milwaukee area. Whether you have questions on where to eat that’s LGBT friendly or how to start up your own Gay-Straight Alliance at your school, our resource center provides a vast array of recommendations so you can seek additional support, service and connections when and where you need it.

Due to our website being under construction, our resource guide is currently limited. We ask that you instead visit the Wisconsin LGBT Chamber of Commerce for a complete directory of LGBT businesses and services.

Voices of Pride

The University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee (UWM) Archives and the Milwaukee LGBT Community Center launched “Voices of Pride,” a community-based project that captures the stories of Milwaukee LGBT leaders, organizers, and everyday people. Interview subjects share stories about coming out, Pride celebrations, LGBT community, and struggles for full civil rights.

The Milwaukee LGBT History Project conducted the interviews in 2003 and 2007. The UWM Archives permanently stores the original recordings and recently made arrangements to digitize them. The Milwaukee LGBT Community Center helps to make sure that they are accessible to the local community by hosting them on its website.

Susan Cook, an early organizer of pride events, discusses coming out to her family.

Donna Burkett, an African American LGBT activist, details her reasons for attempting to marry her partner in 1971.

Ron Geiman, founder of In Step magazine, discusses being gay in the military.

Holly Loveland, who moved to Wisconsin to work, discusses discovering Milwaukee’s LGBT community.

Cathy McConnell, in discussion with her partner Lorrie Neuendorf, remembers becoming .

aware of her sexuality and trying to meet lesbians at bars.

Janice Warren, an LGBT activist, discusses experiencing racial and sexual discrimination at LGBT bars.

The full collection consists of fourteen interviews, and can be found in the Digital Collections of the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee.

GSAs

Gay Straight Alliances or Gender & Sexuality Alliances (GSA) are school/student-led or community based organizations that are intended to provide a safe, supportive environment for lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, and queer/questioning (LGBT+) youth and their straight allies. Below are a few recommendations and best practices on starting and organizing a GSA at your school. If you need support in starting or sustaining a GSA at your school, contact our Youth Advocate, Jamie.

Your GSA Starter Kit

Would you like to start a Gay-Straight Alliance at your school, but you’re not sure where to begin? Here are ten great steps on how to start a GSA in your school.

1. Do Your Research

  • Learn more about your school’s rules for setting up a club.

2. Know Your Reasons

  • First ask yourself, “why do I want to start this club?”

  • Be able to explain the need for such a club

3. Find an Advisor

  • Not all clubs require advisors but the more support, the better

  • Ask a favorite teacher, counselor or supportive administrator

4. Identify Your Allies

  • Who will be your main supporters?

  • Will those supporters help if you encounter resistance?

5. Make the Ask

  • Organize a time to present the club idea

  • Invite key decision makers at your school and ask away

6. Create an Agenda

  • Once you have the club going, plan your first meeting

  • Be prepared and organized with an agenda

7. Advertise

  • Make sure people know about the club with eye catching flyers

  • Use social media, speak at classes, get an email list going

8. Hold Your Meeting

  • Icebreaker activities are good

  • Establish ground rules for the club

9. Create a Calendar

  • Stay organized by setting dates for future meetings and making note of important events

  • Keep the calendar in a place where all  members can access it

10. Reflect

  • What went well after your first meeting?  What didn’t go so well?

Our second focus area is family-based immigration, which includes marriage petitions. Since the DOMA decision, all legal marriages (US or foreign) are now recognized for immigration purposes. We have always found it important to provide low-cost legal services with payment plan options. We recognize that access to compassionate and passionate legal advocacy can be expensive, and we want to do our part to remedy that. Two styles of worship:

In the 9 AM Encounter Worship, we create a space to hear the still, small voice of God. In a more reflective worship style, we praise in song and prayer, hear the word in readings and preaching, and share in the Lord’s Supper.

At 11 AM, we have our Powerhouse Service. We begin with thanks and praise – high energy opening music as the people of God gather. We then move into the prayers of the church – a time when the Spirit moves and the body of Christ is knit together.

The need for foster and adoptive parents in our community is great. In Milwaukee County alone, as many as 100 children are removed from their homes each month, and more than 2,000 children are in out-of-home care at any given time. These children range from infants to teenagers and come from a variety of backgrounds. The one thing they have in common is that, through no fault of their own, they are among society’s most vulnerable. SaintA is currently recruiting foster and adoptive parents from all cultures and family structures. The primary requirements are simply love and caring. Visit GrowHope.net for complete information, including a calendar of our orientation sessions.  Attend one and learn more in person.
