OutVote: Voter Mobilization and Registration Program of the Milwaukee LGBT Community CenterThe Milwaukee LGBT Community Center's voter registration and mobilization program titled OutVote started back in 2002, the OutVote project was originally funded by a $30,000 grant from the Unitarian Universalist Veatch Program at Shelter Rock. The program aims to mobilize and register voters in the Milwaukee area. The program is focused on increasing the LGBT voter turnout for all primary and general elections, state and local. The OutVote project will also build Wisconsin’s first LGBT “voter file,” an electronic list of thousands of self-identified LGBT voters. Deon Young, community organizer, oversees this project. Since 2002 we have had over 4000 LGBT identified voters come out and vote in both primary and general elections. In 2008, we look to register 3,000 new votes. Although the OutVote program does not provide candidate endorsements because of its non-partisan statues, it will educate voters on topics such as how to vote, where to vote, and provide guides for issue-based education on candidates. If you have an event at which you would like an OutVote representative to promote voting, or if you would like to volunteer for the OutVote program and help increase the LGBT vote, please contact us through the LGBT Community Center 'Contact Us' area. The Milwaukee LGBT Community Center is part of a statewide effort to register new voters through the Wisconsin Civic Engagement Project. |
