The Promise of Marriage Equality
UUCW Playhouse presents choral theatre premiere, “The Size of the Dream: Celebrating the Promise of Marriage Equality” in partnership with Equality Wisconsin.
A constitutional amendment to ban same-sex marriage is coming up for a vote on the state ballot. In this choral theatre premiere, a compassionate community organizer leads the group across the state to tell their poignant and personal stories in order to win the hearts and votes of those who will be the hardest to convince. The show combines musical theatre and choral performance with images and video, and will include such musical selections as, “Our Children,” from Ragtime, Burt Bacharach’s “A House is Not a Home,” Brandi Carlisle’s “The Story,” featured on Grey’s Anatomy, and, “Proud,” from NBC’s Biggest Loser.
Musical director-Jamie Schmidt Cast: Lisa Cochran, John Kaspar, Gracie Limbach, Julie Magida, Corliss Morgan, Isaac Sundheimer, Kristen L. Weber and J. Zimdars, with a chorus of seven providing the musical soundtrack for the show.

Remarks by the President on World AIDS Day
THE PRESIDENT: Well, thank you, Sanjay. It is an honor to be with you today and to follow President Kikwete and President Bush. To Bono and Alicia, to the ONE campaign, thank you for bringing us together. Because of your work, all across Africa there are children who are no longer starving, mothers who are no longer dying of treatable diseases, fathers who are again providing for their families. And because of all of you, so many people are now blessed with hope.
We’ve got members of Congress who have done so much for this cause who are here today, and we want to thank them. Let me also thank President Bush for joining us from Tanzania and for his bold leadership on this issue. I believe that history will record the President’s Emergency Plan for AIDS Relief as one of his greatest legacies. And that program -- more ambitious than even the leading advocates thought was possible at the time -- has saved thousands and thousands and thousands of lives, and spurred international action, and laid the foundation for a comprehensive global plan that will impact the lives of millions. And we are proud that we have the opportunity to carry that work forward.

CDC Launches “Testing Makes Us Stronger”
To increase HIV testing rates among black gay and bisexual men, the Centers for Disease Control (CDC) recently launched a new national awareness campaign, Testing Makes Us Stronger. CDC collaborated with gay and bisexual community leaders, physicians and other experts to develop the campaign, which strives to raise awareness, improve access and increase the number of black gay and bisexual men who are aware of their HIV status: the first step to care, treatment and prevention services. Testing Makes Us Stronger encourages men to “stay strong and informed.” The ads depict a diverse range of black gay men, including individuals and couples. The campaign includes national print and online advertising; a dedicated website and Facebook page; promotion at black gay pride events; and outdoor and transit advertising in gay and African-American neighborhoods in six cities where black gay and bisexual men are heavily affected by HIV – Atlanta, Baltimore, Houston, New York City, Oakland, and Washington, D.C. Testing Makes Us Stronger is the latest campaign of Act Against AIDS, CDC’s umbrella campaign to fight complacency about HIV nationwide. Other Act Against AIDS campaigns include those which focus on African-American women, African-American youth, health care providers and the general public.
Statement by President Obama on Congressman Barney Frank’s Retirement
Earlier this week, the President released the following statement following Congressman Barney Frank’s announcement that he will retire from Congress at the end of his current term: This country has never had a Congressman like Barney Frank, and the House of Representatives will not be the same without him. For over 30 years, Barney has been a fierce advocate for the people of Massachusetts and Americans everywhere who needed a voice. He has worked tirelessly on behalf of families and businesses and helped make housing more affordable. He has stood up for the rights of LGBT Americans and fought to end discrimination against them. And it is only thanks to his leadership that we were able to pass the most sweeping financial reform in history designed to protect consumers and prevent the kind of excessive risk-taking that led to the financial crisis from ever happening again. Barney’s passion and his quick wit will be missed in the halls of Congress, and Michelle and I join the people of the Bay State in thanking him for his years of service.

Open Letter to Community at Large
November 18, 2011
Open Letter to the Community at Large
I send a sincere thank you to all, for bringing forth ideas, about the Milwaukee LGBT Community Center regarding the current changes. During times of change we open ourselves up for great opportunity. A community center cannot be a center for all without the community coming together. This is accomplished by the community engaging with the center, and the center visibly engaging with the community.
I am here to listen to your concerns. More than anything, please understand, today is a new day for the Milwaukee LGBT Community Center. On behalf of the center, I invite you to have conversations with me about what you would like to see the center doing in the future. If you know of ways we can open ourselves up to other aspects of the community, please contact me at swalker@mkelgbt.org .
If you know of people who would like to lead the center into a productive future by sharing their leadership, their ideas and talents with us, please send me their names. If you would like to volunteer on a committee, the board, or to help us hone our skills as an organization, please contact me.
I have a positive outlook for what we can achieve if we all work together.
Thank you for all the support during this time of transition.
Sheldon Walker Interim Executive Director Milwaukee LGBT Community Center
Obama Administration and the LGBT Community
Good morning,
Across the Obama Administration, great work is being done to advance equality for lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender people. Last week, Secretary of Housing and Urban Development Shaun Donovan spoke to the National Center for Transgender Equality, where he emphasized the Administration’s ongoing commitment to the LGBT community, and how his Department is working to ensure that everyone has access to housing. Also last week, Labor Secretary Hilda Solis addressed the National Gay and Lesbian Chamber of Commerce, where she spoke about her Department’s commitment to workplace equality for LGBT people. The strong leadership and commitment to equality demonstrated by the Secretaries is reflected throughout the Obama Administration, and every day brings us closer to equality, dignity, and security for LGBT people.
Best regards,
Gautam Raghavan Office of Public Engagement The White House
White House Announces the Health Care Innovation Challenge
The White House recently announced another executive action to help put Americans back to work and strengthen the economy. It’s called the “Health Care Innovation Challenge” and it will award grants to applicants who implement the most compelling new ideas to deliver better health, improved care, and lower costs to people enrolled in Medicare, Medicaid and the Children’s Health Insurance Program, particularly those with the highest health care needs. Awards are expected to range from approximately $1 million to $30 million over three years. Applications are open to providers, payers, local government, community-based organizations and particularly to public-private partnerships and multi-payer approaches. Each grantee project will be evaluated and monitored for measurable improvements in quality of care and savings generated. For more information, including a fact sheet and the Funding Opportunity Announcement, please visit the Health Care Innovation Challenge initiative web site.
Secretary Donovan Addresses the National Center for Transgender Equality
Earlier this week, Secretary for Housing and Urban Development Shaun Donovan delivered the keynote address at the National Center for Transgender Equality’s 8th Annual Awards Ceremony. At the event, Secretary Donovan spoke about the work being done across the Obama Administration to advance equality for LGBT people, and emphasized HUD’s ongoing commitment to ensuring nondiscrimination in housing:
"…I’m here this evening, because this Administration is not only committed to ensuring the transgender community has a seat at the table – but also a place to call home. Every person in this room knows that rights most people take for granted are routinely violated against transgender people. It’s estimated that 1 in 5 transgender Americans have been refused a home or apartment – that more than 1 in 10 have been evicted because of their gender identity or expression. Nowhere is the challenge clearer than in homelessness. Forty percent of homeless youth are LGBT – and half of them report experiencing homelessness as a result of their gender identity or expression. Even more troubling, the majority of them report harassment, difficulty, or even sexual assault when trying to access homeless shelters. Allowing this to happen is wrong – and more importantly, it’s not who we are as Americans."
U.S. Department of Health and Human Services
Recommended Actions to Improve the Health and Well-Being of Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, and Transgender Communities
Below is a summary of the efforts taken by the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) to improve the lives of lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender (LGBT) people, as well as recommendations for future action. The recommendations were developed in response to the Presidential Memorandum on Hospital Visitation, which, in addition to addressing the rights of patients to designate visitors regardless of sexual orientation or gender identity, directed the Secretary to explore additional steps HHS could take to improve the lives of LGBT people.
For too long, LGBT people have been denied the compassionate services they deserve. That is now changing. HHS continues to make significant progress toward protecting the rights of every American to access quality care, recognizing that diverse populations have distinctive needs. Safeguarding the health and well-being of all Americans requires a commitment to treating all people with respect while being sensitive to their differences.
Summary of Actions
Equal Employment Opportunity Policy – In March 2011, Secretary Sebelius updated HHS’s equal employment opportunity policy, which already prohibited discrimination based on sexual orientation, to explicitly protect against unfair treatment of employees and applicants for employment based on gender identity and genetic information.
Non-discrimination Policy – On April 1, 2011, the Secretary issued a new policy explicitly requiring HHS employees to serve all individuals who are eligible for the Department’s programs with...

Press Release LGBT Mental Health Clinic
For Immediate Release Contact: David Martin, Operations Manager 414-292-3066
Dr. Maggi Cage to Lead Milwaukee LGBT Mental Health Clinic. Milwaukee, WI, November 7, 2011 - Dr. Maggi Cage, the executive director of the Milwaukee LGBT Community Center has asked the organization’s board of directors to allow her to move from her executive director role in order to lead the new LGBT Mental Health Clinic at the Community Center and focus on the needs of her family. She will transition into the role of Director of the mental health program immediately.
The LGBT Mental Health Clinic’s funding foundation and its partners in the project have offered positive feedback on the leadership transition. Dr. Cage’s knowledge and background in the mental health community will help the center’s mental health program grow and become even more vital, and an asset to the center as a whole.
“I am pleased to have accomplished everything the board asked of me when I was hired five years ago as the executive director,” Dr. Cage said. “I appreciate their support, and I look forward to continuing to serve in my new capacity.”
Sheldon Walker, current Co-Chair of the Board, will step down from the board temporarily to serve as the interim executive director. Mr. Walker is a good fit as interim executive director because he has been connected with the center and with the gay community in Milwaukee for many years.
“This is a good time for change,” Walker says and “It is time to consider the direction of the center to position us for success in the years to come. As the board seeks a new executive director and makes a new strategic plan, this can be accomplished. This is truly a win-win for the center.”

Highland Ave., started a gallery in January 2011 to complement its outreach programs. Gallery curator Jeremy Hanson hopes that the space will add opportunities for artists who may not have other outlets to show their work in Milwaukee.
"My vision for the gallery space is for it to grow into an LGBT community-run gallery. The Milwaukee LGBT Community Center Gallery would be known as a destination to view and purchase diverse art," Hanson says.

Hundreds of PrideFest attendees created
Hundreds of PrideFest attendees created postcards for a popular assertive communication exercise sponsored by the Anti-Violence Project of the Milwaukee LGBT Community Center. The goal was to help people express what lies beneath their anger when an action or remark causes a reflexive emotional response. The format used was “When you…I feel…Please…”. Responses were often touching, funny, serious, or all three. Examples include, “When you scream and yell at me, I feel disrespected and little. Please talk to me calmly...”; “When you harass me on the street, I feel unsafe and objectified. Please STOP! I am a person, not an object…”; “When you say I’m not godly enough, I feel unimportant and stupid. Please quit judging me.” Some positive sentiments also were expressed: “When you smile at me, I feel like I’m not alone. Please never lose your smile!” AVP Coordinator Maryann Gorski repeated the exercise at the public HIV Awareness event at the Hillside Boys and Girls Club on June 25.

MilwaukeeLGBT Community Center Receives Grant from komen Southeast Wisconsin to increase access to lifesaving breast cancer screenings for hard to reach lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender people
Milwaukee, WI, April 26, 2011 – The Southeast Wisconsin Affiliate of Susan G. Komen for the Cure® has awarded a $104,467 grant to the Milwaukee LGBT Community center to support their LGBT Breast Health Program.
The program targets lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender people who are at-risk for breast cancer in SE Wisconsin with education, outreach and referrals for breast health screenings. The goal is to increase knowledge and awareness of breast cancer risks as experienced in the LGBT community and to increase access to breast cancer screenings. This is important as an increasing number of research studies in recent years suggest that lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender individuals are at greater risk than the general population to suffer adverse health outcomes and may face significant barriers to health care, including breast health screenings.
This year the LGBT Breast Health Program plans to provide outreach to approximately 3,000 people and refer more than 200 for breast cancer screening. People that are uninsured or underinsured will be referred for free screenings. Upon completion of the screening a $50 gift card to Pick N Save may be provided. LGBT identified people from 8 southeastern Wisconsin counties are eligible – including Ozaukee, Washington, Milwaukee, Waukesha, Kenosha, Racine, Walworth and Jefferson. To participate in the LGBT Breast Health Program or find out more about your risks contact the Program Coordinator, Claudia Kabler-Babbitt at 414-292-3061 or ckb@mkelgbt.org.
Lesbian Alliance and local musicians support breast cancer screening in the LGBT community

The Coffeehouse Show for Breast Health featured three wonderful and generous singer/songwriters Sook (Amanda Suckow), Diane Bloom and singer Roxie Beane. There were refreshments and raffle prizes and approximately 50 attendees. Lesbian Tent Revival presented by Cream City Foundation and Lesbian Alliance of Metro Milwaukee. Sister Carolyn of the Sisterhood of the Sacred Synapse is rolling into Milwaukee’s LGBT Community Center on January 14 with her hilarious, soul-saving Lesbian Tent Revival! The smash-hit of the 2010 Michigan Womyn’s Music Festival, the Revival has been drawing hundreds of lesbians to “services” that combine side-splitting comedy with a razor-sharp politics, as Sister Carolyn preaches the gospel of old-time, feel-good, smash-the-patriarchy sisterhood. “Sister Carolyn” in another incarnation is the internationally acclaimed playwright and performer Carolyn Gage, author of twelve books and fifty-five plays. Milwaukee LGBT Community Center Board of Directors Becomes Self-Perpetuating Board
December 6, 2010-At its recent Membership Meeting of the Milwaukee LGBT Community Center, the members voted (by nearly a 75% majority) to make the Board of Directors a self- perpetuating board with the ability to amend its bylaws. In the arena of community-based nonprofit organizations, self-perpetuating Boards have been established as a best practice. The vast majority of LGBT organizations throughout the country, including the ones closest to us in Chicago and Madison, and the recently formed Center in Racine, are governed by self-perpetuating Boards.
The rationale for the bylaw changes were reviewed extensively in various letters, meetings, and discussions over the past several months. Here are several of these rationale: The primary duty of nonprofits is “to serve society” as a whole, and self-perpetuating Boards tend to enhance volunteer engagement. Through the creation and nurturing of “career ladders” for volunteers from helping on events, to volunteering at the Center, to serving on a Committee of the Board, to serving as a Director on the Board, more people tend to participate in the organization. Effective Boards are proactive bodies that focus on strategic impact and generative thinking. The Governance Committee is commissioned by the Board to ensure that all Board seats are filled by active, committed, and resourceful Directors who bring the skills and expertise necessary to govern the organization effectively. These skills and areas of expertise change as organizations grow and mature. Best practice demonstrates that the responsibility for ensuring an effective Board is best fulfilled when the Board is self-perpetuating. Our Center continues to grow dramatically, and this growth requires a different set of skills and expertise among its Board Directors than it did in the past. What may be new information for some on the oversight of nonprofit boards is the level of scrutiny of board finances and activities. Changes in legislation over the years have made reporting more in-depth and expansive regarding finances and bylaw changes. The Internal Revenue Service (IRS) now requires detailed information on internal controls, policies and practices. Auditors review and evaluate this information during the annual audit required of every 501C (3) organization.
Over the years, nonprofit organizations and consultants have identified several potential issues with member-elected Boards. One potential issue with membership -elected Boards is that this duty to “serve society”(grounded in nonprofit law) is often obscured by a member’s possible tendency “to serve his or her own constituency,” e.g., members, or a segment of the LGBT community exclusively. Membership-elected Boards tend to be more reactive – focusing on issues that are impacting a constituent group at a given moment. A membership-elected model for Board Directorship can serve as an “excuse” for lack of active engagement with the Center: many current members come to the annual meeting to elect the Board Directors and then are not seen again until the next annual meeting. Their current knowledge of the organization and its governance needs are therefore very limited – and may be often grounded in the past. Membership-elected boards can lead to the consolidation of power in a small number of members who may not be representative of the full membership.
These rationale have been reviewed in several venues with members.
We appreciate the passion many members of the Center and members of the community have for the work of the Milwaukee LGBT Community Center, and the pride taken in its creation since 1998 and in its continuing success, growth, and impact. The Board has developed ways for members to be more fully engaged with the Center’s mission and informed of developments. We have already made progress in improving broad communications, and will continue these efforts. We are looking for Leadership Volunteers who will take increased ownership for volunteer recruitment, engagement, and support. We believe that active engagement in the Center’s mission and programs will result in a much more meaningful voice for our participants, volunteers and members and success for the Center’s programs.

Statement by President Obama on DOD Report on Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell
THE WHITE HOUSE
Office of the Press Secretary
________________________________________________________________
FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
November 30, 2010
Statement by President Obama on DOD Report on Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell
As Commander in Chief, I have pledged to repeal the “don’t ask, don’t tell” law because it weakens our national security, diminishes our military readiness, and violates fundamental American principles of fairness and equality by preventing patriotic Americans who are gay from serving openly in our armed forces. At the same time, as Commander in Chief, I am committed to ensuring that we understand the implications of this transition, and maintain good order and discipline within our military ranks. That is why I directed the Department of Defense earlier this year to begin preparing for a transition to a new policy.
Today’s report confirms that a strong majority of our military men and women and their families—more than two thirds—are prepared to serve alongside Americans who are openly gay and lesbian. This report also confirms that, by every measure—from unit cohesion to recruitment and retention to family readiness—we can transition to a new policy in a responsible manner that ensures our military strength and national security. And for the first time since this law was enacted 17 years ago today, both the Secretary of Defense and the Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff have publicly endorsed ending this policy.
With our nation at war and so many Americans serving on the front lines, our troops and their families deserve the certainty that can only come when an act of Congress ends this discriminatory policy once and for all. The House of Representatives has already passed the necessary legislation. Today I call on the Senate to act as soon as possible so I can sign this repeal into law this year and ensure that Americans who are willing to risk their lives for their country are treated fairly and equally. Our troops represent the virtues of selfless sacrifice and love of country that have enabled our freedoms. I am absolutely confident that they will adapt to this change and remain the best led, best trained, best equipped fighting force the world has ever known.

President Obama Welcomes New HIV Prevention Research Results
THE WHITE HOUSE Office of the Press Secretary ___________________________________________________________________________ FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE November 23, 2010
President Obama Welcomes New HIV Prevention Research Results
WASHINGTON, D.C. – Today, the National Institutes of Health announced findings on recent HIV prevention research. The study finds that a daily dose of an oral antiretroviral drug taken by HIV-negative gay and bisexual men reduced the risk of acquiring HIV infection by 43.8 percent, and had even higher rates of effectiveness, up to 73 percent, among those participants who adhered most closely to the daily drug regimen.
“I am encouraged by this announcement of groundbreaking research on HIV prevention. While more work is needed, these kinds of studies could mark the beginning of a new era in HIV prevention. As this research continues, the importance of using proven HIV prevention methods cannot be overstated,” said President Obama.
One of the President’s top HIV/AIDS policy priorities was the development and implementation of a National HIV/AIDS Strategy (NHAS), which was released in July 2010. As underlined in the NHAS, no HIV prevention method is 100 percent effective, and a combination of approaches including, among other steps, consistent condom use, will be necessary to prevent HIV infection. Nevertheless, the research results announced this past summer of an effective microbicide and today’s results fall directly in line with priority recommendations in the NHAS. Moreover, today’s study suggests that antiretroviral medication may serve as one more valuable tool as we seek to develop the best combinations of effective approaches to prevent HIV infection.

The eastside encompasses land next to the lake downtown and north along the shoreline to the University of Wisconsin Milwaukee. Main thoroughfares are North Avenue, Prospect Avenue and Downer Street. Traditionally, the eastside has been a liberal minded area of the city.
The Sherman Park area of Milwaukee (53208) is a near west side area with a large gay population. It is one of the few integrated neighborhoods in Milwaukee. The main drag is Sherman Park Blvd.
Gay Bars tend to be on the near south side in an area called Walkers Point. National Avenue and 6th St are main thoroughfares. Walkers Point (53204) is one of the oldest neighborhoods in Milwaukee. NATIONAL ALERT: ANTI-LGBTQ PICK-UP VIOLENCE ON THE RISE
NATIONAL ALERT: ANTI-LGBTQ PICK-UP VIOLENCE ON THE RISE
April 29, 2010
The National Coalition of Anti-Violence Programs (NCAVP) has tracked an increase in pick-up violence targeting lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender and queer (LGBTQ) community members. The 39 member organizations of NCAVP have also documented an increase in the severity of the crimes committed. The primary targets appear to be men who use websites, chatlines and phone applications to meet other men for dates.
In Washington, D.C., NCAVP member Gays and Lesbians Opposing Violence (GLOV) issued a community advisory after the recent murders of Brian Betts and Anthony Perkins, both of whom may have been targeted through pick-up sites or chatlines. In Phoenix, Mark Woodland was robbed and murdered on Saturday, April 24th, allegedly by a man he met on the iPhone application Grindr. “The perceived anonymity of online cruising can also create a barrier to reporting pick up violence for fear of being ‘outed’ as LGBTQ, being re-victimized, blamed for the assault or reinforcing homophobic myths,” said Joe Montoni, Co-Chair of GLOV, “however, we encourage survivors to report any attacks because everyone has the right to stand up against violence.”
The New York City Anti-Violence Project (NYC AVP) has documented over 25 pick-up crime incidents in 2009, most of which involve internet dating sites, including adam4adam and craigslist. The types of reported crimes range from theft and drugging, to sexual violence and murder and it has been reported that some assailants are working in teams.
NCAVP offers the following dating safety tips to empower LGBTQ people to prevent and resist pick-up violence. Karyn Lathan, AVP Program Coordinator at the One Voice Community Center in Phoenix states, “We extend our condolences to Mr. Woodland’s family and friends and encourage LGBTQ people to review these critical steps to keep themselves safer when dating or hooking up.”
NCAVP encourages you to share these tips with your friends, loved ones and communities. To report an incident or locate an anti-violence program in your area, please contact info@ncavp.org or our 24-hour, bilingual (English/Spanish) hotline at 212.714.1141.
Key Safety Tips
Safe is not just about sex. The following tips may help you stay safer when meeting people online or on the phone. People that commit violence and crime tend to target those they perceive to be vulnerable and less credible to law enforcement. Please see our safer dating guide for NCAVP’s complete tips.
• Trust your gut instinct – if it doesn’t feel right, exit the situation.
• Get a face picture and phone number before meeting in person. Share this with a trusted friend.
• Meet in public, close to your destination, before going to a private place.
• If you invite the person to your place, take steps to protect valuables and leave items that could be used as weapons out of sight.
• If you go to the other person’s place, tell at least one person the exact address where you will be and for how long.
• Set up a silent alarm by setting a time to text or call your friend when the date is over. Typically, the agreement is if you do not call/text at the time agreed upon, the friend should call you. If you do not answer or if you answer and do not say the code word, your friend should call the police or another trusted resource.
• Have an exit strategy – know how you will leave if your date makes you feel uncomfortable or unsafe.
• Make careful choices about your clothing: avoid wearing anything around your neck and wear comfortable clothing and footwear.
• If you would like to speak with someone about an incident, no matter what happened, call NCAVP at 212-714-1141.
These are safety tools that have been useful in some situations. Use the ones that fit best for you. Follow your instincts, and remember that you do deserve to be safe.
*** The National Coalition of Anti-Violence Programs (NCAVP) addresses the pervasive problem of violence committed against and within the lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender and queer (LGBTQ) and HIV-affected communities. NCAVP is a coalition of programs that document and advocate for victims and survivors of anti-LGBTQ and anti-HIV/AIDS violence/harassment, domestic violence, sexual assault, police misconduct and other forms of victimization. Further, NCAVP supports existing anti-violence organizations and emerging local programs in their efforts to document and prevent such violence. NCAVP is a program of the New York City Anti-Violence Project.
