Project Q

Project Q is the “for youth, by youth” youth development program of the Milwaukee LGBT Community Center. The program serves lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, queer, questioning and allied (LGBTQA) youth ages 12 to 24 in the greater Milwaukee area. The program provides opportunities for the development and leadership of these youth in a safe, accessible space.

PROGRAMMING

Project Q serves over 750 unduplicated youth annually, approximately 100 of those youth receive extensive case management services where staff meet one-on-one with youth to assist them with life problems. Project Q also provides weekly programming Tuesday through Friday with Mondays focused on training and case management.

Tuesday and Friday are “drop-in” days when youth listen to music, work on computers, and socialize in between structured education on subjects from HIV to cooking. Every Wednesday, the program offers a video club that presents a film after which youth discuss the messages conveyed.

Thursdays are population-specific subject nights when youth engage in a guided discussion about issues that affect people of color, young men, young women, or transgender/gender non-conforming youth.

  • To advocate for and collaborate with programs and organizations that meet the varied needs of LGBTQA young adults and their communities;

  • To empower young adults to make healthy (informed) decisions about sexual health (such as HIV/AIDS, sexually transmitted infections, and pregnancy.) as well as personal wellness (finances and relationships, for example);

  • To design and implement activities which ensure diversity in every aspect of Project Q; and,

  • To provide a space that affirms LGBTQA young adults to fully identify and express themselves without fear of ridicule and harassment.
